INTERVIEW - SAMIR SONI

He is one man who shines even in a small character Whether it be Jassi, Baghbaan or Vivah, he has made his mark with his work, With Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, Samir Soni is now all set to hit the silver screen once again, this time for his bold move to play a gay designer without any qualms. With research as the key and the temperament to be as authentic as possible without offending or hurting any community unintentionally, Samir Soni is clear that it is his histrionics that should talk. A tete-a-tete with Samir Soni...

Why did you pick up a role that was rejected by many?

More so as it was a gay character….
I am an actor and any role that comes to me and is challenging is exciting to me I loved the character that director Madhur Bhandarkar offered me. The understanding was clear. The gayness of the character would not override his personality.

How did you design the look of the character…
It was a very interesting look for my character, Rahul Arora. He would wear a mascara but would have a stubble. And we had to draw that healthy balance.

How did you play the character? Was there any particular person you looked up to for this character?
There was a lot of research that went into the role. Madhur and I attended as many fashion shows as we could in Mumbai and Delhi even during the shoot. The pre-show interaction of the designer and the models and he post-show parties were very important.
Some designers even allowed us to be there in the rehearsals to see the relationship between the model and the designer. Madhur is a stickler for accuracy and that was important. Even during the shoot, leading ramp choreographers and models -- someone or the other was always there Every detail was taken care of. Authenticity was the focus. We do not want to offend anyone.

Would the designers be themselves when they knew that you were looking for cues to play one of them?
Well we were quite discreet and never let anyone know that we were observing and later would exchange notes on how to shape the character.

What was exciting about playing a gay designer?
It was exciting on several levels. Firstly I had never played such character before and I don’t think anyone would expect me to play it. Also, the charectar was so beautifully etched out that it would be any actor’s dream. But most importantly, the challenge of playing a gay designer convincingly, without stereo typing it and hoping the masses accept him and see beyond his sexual orientation. For the latter I was lucky to have Madhur guidind me and at the same time giving me the space to experiment.
He was a designer and just that his sexual orientation happened to be different. I have friends who are gay and thy talk of their boyfriends the same way I would talk about a girlfriend. There is nothing different about them otherwise. Mean, there are gays that you don’t know are gays unless you were told. It was the essence of the character that was exciting And you can say that I got more than my share of compliments from the females and the males.

How was it working with Priyanka?
To quote her she’s “over worked and under-paid”. Jokes aside she’s a fine actor and a very sensitive girl. Though, most of the film I kept my distance, firstly because I’m comfortable with that and secondly because I thought it would help our scenes, since my charectar is this successful fashion designer and she an up coming model. I wanted to make that equation on screen come out strong. Whenever I saw her I wanted to see a struggling model and the successful actress that she is.

You are perceived as snobbish due to your introvertedness?
Yes I am an introvert and that’s the way I have always been since childhood. From time to time I do make the effort to be more outgoing and friendly but find it too exhausting and just cant sustain it, more so at work. I keep a lot to myself during shoots unless the scene requires otherwise. Sometimes people do misunderstand that but unfortunately I can’t help it. Also, I’d rather conserve my energy and give a hundred percent to my work. I find it difficult to live with myself if I’m unable to give it all whether it’s a film, a play or a 30 second add.

How was it working with Madhur Bhandarkar?
Madhur is the warmest nicest guy I have met as a director. I have never met a director who is so hassle free and easy going, always open for suggestions. And I have never seen him stressed or shout or anything on the set. He never says pack up. He says vande mataram. That is his sign off statement.

What next?
There is Sanjay Gupta’s Alibaug and an Englsh arthouse film My Friend Dragonman. But for now, I am awaiting Fashion. I think I have done a good job in this film and the critic in me agrees too!

Golmaal lads Cross –Dress!!

Golmaal Returns lads Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade cross-dress on Director Rohit Shetty's call!!! There was a scene in the film that required the guy gang to dress up like women. And it happens to be a Women's day so they dress up like women to enter the mall, as only women were allowed to enter on that particular day. No wonder the guys got some strange looks from the women folk around, but then no complaining when you are the centre of attraction, right guys?

Rohit Shetty shares, "I was quite taken aback when Ajay (Devgan) agreed to this scene in particular. He was very gung-ho to go ahead with the scene!! Infact none of the guys had any reservations, which made it one of the best scenes in the film."

The film also stars Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley &Anjana Sukhani, and is produced by Shree Ashtavinayak's Cinevision Limited. The film will hit the theaters this Diwali on 29 th October'08.

This one will surely grab the eyeballs to say the least!!!

Taal se taal mila….

At 86, she was trembling with fever. She couldn't walk without a walker and needed two people to assist her to climb on stage. But the moment Dr Soma Ghosh began to sing at the Pranganga Swarotsav Sangeet Parampara Fest than Sitara Devi the performer took charge. From the body of an 86-year-old, a 16-year-old danseuse full of energy emerged. Sitara Devi held the audiences mesmerized at Bhavan's College, Andheri to the voice of veteran vocalist and Bismillah Khan's only female disciple Dr Soma Ghosh's rendition for over an hour.
From playing Ram's mother Kaushalya to a lover pining for her beloved to the young toddler Rama, to a young woman who got her chunari wet in the first rains, Sitara Devi seemed to get more energetic with time. The woman who was sitting on a chair in the first few moments forgot everything except the moment she lived and the character she essayed.
"I think everyone in the audience must have thought of his beloved listening to Soma," she stated at one point taking over the mike. "I did too! And I know he is there somewhere as he keeps calling!"
Armed with her quick wit and her steps, the amphitheatre of Bhavan's college resonated with the sound of melodious music as Soma Ghosh coaxed and cajoled Sitara Devi with her song where a woman was pining for her beloved…
"I am touched," said Soma who organized the event. "Despite her age and health, Sitara Deviji actually came and performed."
Violinist N Rajam came to see her daughter Sangeeta Shankar on the violin while vocalist Rimi Basu, Kathak exponent Aditi Bhagwat and Nandita Puri graced the event.
The last word however was from Sitara Devi. "This is just the trailer. Come back when the film releases," stated the maestro post her performance. "Make sure you people are there. You matter more to me than any Padmashree."

When Madhur's warmth touched Samir Soni!

Actor Samir Soni is excited about Fashion। And as much as he is excited about the carefully etched character Rahul Arora that he is essaying, he is happy that he got an opportunity to work with director Madhur Bhandarkar.
Normally an actor who is choosy about his words, Samir beams when asked about Madhur. "I have never met a director who is so hassle free and down to earth, who knows what he wants and yet is always open to suggestions. And I have never seen Madhur stressed or shout on the set. On the contrary he's constantly making everyone laugh, his way of showing his delight after a good performance is by giving you a big hug and applauding with his pet phrase "jalwa", now part of the title track. He never says pack up. He just says Vande Mataram. That is his sign off statement. Although he's playing it down, but we've already started teasing him about National Award No. Four."

Aamir and Sanjeeda's navratri in Dubai!

The festive season of Navratri sure wasn't restricted to our country only, and so were not our television actors either. Apparently the most adored couple Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh who star in Kya Dill Main Hain, were recently in Dubai to celebrate the occasion. This also happens to be the first time actors from television were performing for Navratri in Dubai.

After having won Nach Baliye a year ago, they still happen to be the hot favourite for dance shows and events. And although Aamir claims albeit he in not too much into dandiya, the experience in Dubai was over-helming,

"I was never too much into dancing earlier and especially dandiya during Navratri. But after NB, dancing has become a part of our lives. The people in Subai were so warm and affectionate. It was a great experience." Says Aamir.

Rajneesh Duggal on a high!

Handsome Rajneesh Duggal who made his debut with Vikram Bhatt's '1920' is not new to female adoration being a former model. But ever since his film has hit the screens, he has touched the heart of women of all ages! The reason being not just his good looks but his impressive recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa in the movie!

Apparently not many people are aware, that it wasn't for the movie he learnt it, but a habit inculcated in childhood itself. We hear, Rajneesh used to be very nervous as a child and terribly scared of the dark, which is why his mother made him learn the Hanuman Chalisa at the age of 10. This explains his beautiful recitation of the same in the movie with so much ease. And post the movie release, innumerous fans have been coming upto him to congratulate on the great work.
"Yes, much more than my work in the entire movie, just the Hanuman Chalisa recitation has created a great impact on the audience. Recently a middle-aged lady came up to me and told me she came to watch the movie for the second time because she loved the film and even cried during my chanting in the end." says Rajneesh.

Kabhi neem, kabhi namak.- Madhushree

Black coffee, bread and a no salt diet made Madhushree lose five kgs in a fortnight. "I lost two and half kgs in three days. I did feel weak but there was a purpose, I had to look good for the shoot," confesses Madhushree who, after the success of her latest album is now getting film offers.
"I am a singer first and enjoy music," says Madhushree who did her national tour and stage dance during one of her shows with a broken foot. "It is the high you get when you get on stage. When I sing, I simply forget everything else and live the moment."
